40 personalities in the field of Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional, Folk, Tribal Music, Dance, Theatre and Puppetry have been honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee presented the Fellowships and Awards for the year 2014 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday.
The fellows included S R Janakiraman, M.S Sathyu, Vijay Kichlu and Tulsidas Borkar. The Fellowship of the Akademi is the most prestigious and rare honour, which is restricted to a very limited number at a given time. Presently there are only 40 Fellows of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
The honour of Akademi Fellow not only symbolizes the highest standard of excellence and achievements on a national basis, but also is considered as recognition for sustained individual work and contribution to the practice and appreciation of the arts through performance, teaching and scholarship.
Besides 36 personalities from the fields of Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/ Dance/Theatre & Puppetry and Overall contribution/scholarship in Performing Arts were honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2014.
The awardees also included Puran Shah Koti for promoting traditional music of Punjab. Ustad Koti holds the distinction of having trained some of the popular Punjabi singers including Han Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi and Master Salim.
The honour of Akademi Fellow carries purse money of Rs three lakhs and Akademi Awards carry Rs Rupees one lakh.
