The liquor baron, Shiv Lal Doda is a powerful person and the Abohar gruesome incident at his farm house was a message to his previous, present and future employees that any defiance won’t be tolerated, this was argued by senior advocate Anupam Gupta while opposing the anticipatory bail of Shiv Lal Doda before Justice M M S Bedi of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Anupam Gupta appeared for the family members of deceased Bhim Singh and also Gurjant Singh who had sustained injuries in the incident.

Gupta informed the bench that police did not take any action as Doda was a powerful and well connected person who had connections with the top state leadership. Anupam Gupta also showed some old photographs, in which Doda is seen with chief minister and deputy chief minister.

Gupta further argued that the area SHO, Harinder Singh Chameli enjoyed hospitality of Doda for four months, how could the police arrest or even name him in the FIR.

The state government also opposed the anticipatory bail plea of Doda and told the high court that prime accused in the case, Harpreet had revealed details about Doda’s involvement in the case. The state counsel also argued that a day before the incident, a mobile conversation took place between principal accused Harpreet and Amit, nephew of Shiv Lal Doda who was accompanying Doda in Delhi. Another conversation on same number took place about an hour before the incident on December 11.

Senior advocate, RS Rai, who appeared for Doda, raised questions over the credibility of the complainant Ranjit Singh brother of Gurjant Singh and also questioned as to why Ranjit took Bhim Tank to a private hospital in Amritsar instead of medical college in Faridkot.

Bhim Tank, a Dalit youth was murdered in Abohar on December 11, 2015. His both hands and legs were chopped off. Another person, Gurjant Singh was injured in the incident, which allegedly took place in the farmhouse of Doda.

After hearing the arguments, Justice M M S Bedi reserved orders on anticipatory bail application of Shiv Lal Doda.
